The Zarya Center for Contemporary Art will host a round table on the topic of “The Creative Institution as a Outpost.” Participants in the discussion will include representatives from the Vladivostok art world alongside leadership from the Garage Museum in Moscow, including director Anton Belov and chief curator Kate Fowle. The speakers will debate the influence of cultural institutions in the development of a region.

It is the opinion of the panel organizers that the emergence of sustained activity from both new and established institutions in the region invariably leads to political and social changes. When building an art scene, one must first start with the foundations before developing the alternatives. Thus, in order to discuss the self-organized art communities of the Far East, one cannot overlook the opening of an art school, the Far East Academy of Art, or the appearance of private galleries.

Just as the founding of the Primorsky State Picture Gallery confirmed Vladivostok’s status as a cosmopolitan city and regional center, so the launch of what was first a center, and now a museum – the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art – secures the Russian capital a spot on the list of international cities where one can go to see contemporary art of the highest echelon.

Now, on the eve of the opening of a branch of the Hermitage and two years into Zarya CCA’s activity in Vladivostok, the round table “The Creative Institution as a Outpost” raises a number of questions, contemplating the interaction with the local and global art scenes, the possible aims of the institution, and the development of contemporary art in the absence of an art market
